3. Home Coffee Basics: DOSE

When it comes to making delicious espresso at home. There are a few key things we focus on. In this blog we will be talking about one in particular 'dose'.

What is Dose?

In espresso making, the term 'dose' refers to the amount of coffee grounds used to make a single shot of espresso. This measurement is typically expressed in grams and can vary depending on the type of coffee beans, grind size, and personal preference.

Why is Dose Important?

The dose plays a significant role in determining the flavour, strength, and overall quality of the espresso. Using too little coffee grounds can result in a weak and under-extracted shot, while using too much can lead to a bitter and over-extracted taste.

How to Determine the Right Dose

Finding the perfect dose for your espresso can be a bit of trial and error. Start by following the recommendations provided by your coffee machine manufacturer. We generally use 18g of coffee for our double basket in a Breville Machine. We aim for 18g of coffee in 36g of espresso out over 30 seconds. This follows the general guideline of 1:2 grams to espresso.

Experimenting with Dose

Once you have a baseline dose, don't be afraid to experiment with different doses to find the perfect balance of flavour and strength. Keep in mind that small adjustments can make a big difference in the final taste of your espresso.

Remember, the dose is just one of many factors that contribute to a great cup of espresso. By understanding the importance of dose and how it impacts the overall flavour profile, you can take your espresso making skills to the next level.
